Asus Windows 8 not seeing OS/HDD

0 like 0 dislike

I'm attempting to repair an Asus A55A running Windows 8 that displays the following error on boot.

Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key.

At first, we reseated the device. Still didn't boot. This looked like a simple failing HDD. However, PC-Check diagnostic live CD recognizes the HDD and passes it on every test, including read/read-verify/SMART/Cache/Mechanics stress.

Then we attempted to access the files using a live CD. This was a success. Every file is accessible without issue. We then attempted to run a recovery console to fix the MBR.

We ran the following commands...

  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • bootrec /fixboot
  • bootrec /scanos
  • bootrec /rebuildbcd

scanos and rebuildbcd report the following...

  • Successfully scanned Windows installations.
  • Total identified Windows installations: 0 Upon rebooting, we received the same 'Select boot device' error.

When this didn't work, we attempted to modify the Windows Boot Manager device line from...

  • partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume1

  • partition=c:

The OS continues to fail to boot. I do not have much experience working with Windows 8/UEFI, anybody have any ideas?
